What is Conversational AI?
Conversational AI is the class of systems that hold a natural dialogue with people (on websites, WhatsApp, Instagram, or inside apps) and increasingly take actions during the conversation: booking, ordering, checking, updating.
The term covers a spectrum. At the bottom: the old rule-based chatbot with buttons and canned answers, which mostly annoyed people. In the middle: LLM-powered assistants that genuinely understand free-form questions and answer from your business data. At the top: conversational agents that complete transactions in the chat itself, checking real inventory, placing the order, booking the appointment, then handing to a human when the conversation needs one.
Channel matters as much as intelligence in this region. In Lebanon, the Gulf, and most of MENA, customers live on WhatsApp and Instagram DMs; a website-only assistant misses where the actual demand arrives. The integration work (WhatsApp Business API, Instagram, the booking system, the POS) is usually more engineering than the AI itself, and it is exactly the part template chatbot products skip.
From our own builds: Panda’s in-app assistant handles grocery questions and recipe-to-basket in Saudi dialect and hands off to Genesys when a human should take over; our own product Tamr gives restaurants an AI waiter guests reach by scanning a QR, asking about the menu in whatever language they speak. In both, the make-or-break details were dialect quality, honest answers when data is missing, and clean human handover. Judge any conversational AI on those three before admiring the demo.
Frequently asked
- What is the difference between conversational AI and a chatbot?
- Chatbot usually means the old rule-based system with buttons and canned answers. Conversational AI covers the fuller spectrum, up to assistants that understand free-form questions and agents that complete transactions in the chat, checking real inventory and placing the order. The difference is whether it genuinely understands and acts, or just matches you to a script.
- Can conversational AI work on WhatsApp?
- Yes, and in this region it should. Customers across Lebanon and the Gulf live on WhatsApp and Instagram DMs, so a website-only assistant misses where demand actually arrives. The integration work, WhatsApp Business API, the booking system, the POS, is usually more engineering than the AI itself, and it is exactly the part template chatbot products skip.
- What makes a conversational AI project succeed or fail?
- Three details decide it: dialect quality, honest answers when data is missing, and clean human handover. Our Panda assistant hands off to Genesys when a person should take over; our Tamr AI waiter answers only from what the restaurant actually provided. Judge any conversational AI on those three before admiring the demo.
