How to rank on ChatGPT (and why normal SEO does not get you there)

The short version

  • There is no ranked list inside ChatGPT. You are either named in the answer or you are absent, so the goal is citation, not position.
  • ChatGPT’s crawler does not execute JavaScript. If your page builds itself in the browser, the engine sees an empty shell no matter how good the content is.
  • Engines quote short, self-contained passages. Put a forty to sixty word direct answer at the top of the page, under a heading that matches the question.
  • ChatGPT’s retrieval leans on Bing, so a site missing from the Bing index is invisible to it regardless of Google rankings.

The question gets asked as “how to rank on ChatGPT”, but ChatGPT has no rankings. It produces one answer, usually naming two or three companies. You are either in that answer or you are not. That single difference changes what the work looks like.

First: can the crawler read your page at all?

This is the step that decides everything else, and it is the one most sites fail. Independent analysis of more than 500 million requests from ChatGPT’s crawler found no evidence of JavaScript execution. The same holds for Perplexity’s and Anthropic’s crawlers. They fetch the raw HTML, take what is there, and move on. They do not wait for rendering and they do not come back to try again.

So if your site is a single-page application that assembles content in the browser, those engines see an empty shell. Your content is not ranked badly; it does not exist. Google renders JavaScript and will still index you, which is exactly why teams with healthy Google traffic are surprised to find themselves absent from AI answers.

The check takes a minute: fetch your own page with JavaScript disabled and read what comes back. If the text you want quoted is missing, that is the whole problem, and no amount of writing fixes it.

Second: is your answer quotable?

Engines lift passages, not pages. A paragraph that builds carefully to a conclusion reads well to a person and is useless to a model deciding what to quote. What gets used is a short, self-contained statement that answers the question on its own, placed under a heading that matches how the question is asked.

  • Lead with a forty to sixty word direct answer, before the context and the caveats.
  • Use the question itself as the heading, in the words people use rather than your internal vocabulary.
  • Keep each answer able to stand alone, because it will be read without the surrounding page.
  • Add a frequently-asked-questions block with structured data, which is the format engines parse most reliably.

Third: does anything establish who you are?

Answer engines name entities they recognise. Recognition comes from consistency: your own site, your listings, and third-party mentions all describing the same company in compatible terms. Where sources disagree, the engine hedges and names somebody else. This is the slowest part of the work and the least amenable to shortcuts.

Fourth: are you in Bing?

ChatGPT’s retrieval leans heavily on Bing’s index. Plenty of sites are thoroughly indexed by Google and barely present in Bing, and they are invisible inside ChatGPT for that reason alone. Verifying the site in Bing Webmaster Tools and submitting a sitemap is an afternoon of work with a disproportionate payoff.

What does not work

  • Injecting tags with JavaScript. Several automated SEO tools apply their changes client-side, which produces optimisations the AI crawlers never see.
  • Keyword density. There is no keyword field in an answer; there is a question and a passage that answers it.
  • Publishing more of the same. Ten articles that never state an answer plainly perform worse than one page that does.

Do the four checks above in order. Most sites find the first one is the whole story.

Frequently asked

How do I rank in ChatGPT?
You cannot rank in ChatGPT because it does not publish a ranked list. You can be cited in its answers, which requires your pages to be readable without JavaScript, to answer questions directly in short passages, and to be indexed in Bing, which ChatGPT retrieval relies on.
Does ChatGPT use Google or Bing?
ChatGPT’s browsing and retrieval lean on Bing rather than Google. A site absent from the Bing index can be invisible inside ChatGPT even with strong Google rankings.
How long does it take to appear in ChatGPT answers?
Technical fixes register when the crawler next fetches the page, often within days. Appearing in answers is slower and less predictable, usually weeks, because retrieval and model updates run on their own schedule.
Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?
Not for the organic answer. Advertising products are appearing in AI search separately, but the citation itself is earned through readability, clear answers, and recognisable evidence.
