LLM SEO: what it is, what it is not, and what to actually do

The short version

  • LLM SEO, AEO, GEO, and AI SEO describe substantially the same work. The deliverables overlap almost entirely.
  • The practice is mostly technical: server-rendered HTML, structured data, crawler permissions, and short direct answers.
  • Measurement is different from SEO. You track citation rate against a fixed prompt set, plus referral traffic from AI engines in your own analytics.
  • Beware tools that apply changes with JavaScript. AI crawlers do not execute it, so those changes are invisible to the engines you are optimising for.

The vocabulary in this field is worse than the field. LLM SEO, answer engine optimization (AEO), generative engine optimization (GEO), and AI SEO are used interchangeably by most practitioners, including us. If a vendor charges separately for three of them, that is a pricing decision rather than a technical distinction.

What LLM SEO actually is

It is the work of making a website legible and quotable to large language models that answer questions, so the brand is named in the answer itself. Classic search engine optimisation competes for a position in a list of links. This competes to be inside a single generated response, where there is no second page of results and no long tail of positions to occupy.

The order the work goes in

  1. Readability. Serve real HTML. AI crawlers do not execute JavaScript, so anything assembled in the browser is invisible to them. This one item accounts for most failures.
  2. Machine-readable structure. Publish structured data describing your organisation, your products, and your questions, and make sure two sources do not contradict each other.
  3. Access. Allow the AI crawlers in robots.txt, check that bot protection is not serving them a challenge page, and get the site indexed in Bing, which ChatGPT retrieval leans on.
  4. Answers. One page per real question, each opening with a self-contained forty to sixty word answer under a heading that matches the question.
  5. Evidence. Specific, attributable claims and third-party corroboration, because recommendation answers lean on sources that compare options.
  6. Measurement. A fixed prompt set, re-run on a schedule, plus AI referral traffic in your analytics.

How to measure it

Two numbers are worth tracking. Citation rate: for a fixed set of buying-intent prompts, how often you are named, and where in the answer. Referral traffic: visits arriving from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, and similar, which appear in ordinary analytics if attribution is configured to keep them. Everything else is noise, and impression counts in particular do not transfer from search consoles to answer engines.

What to be sceptical of

ClaimWhy to doubt it
Guaranteed placement in AI answersNo vendor controls model retrieval. Placement cannot be guaranteed by anyone.
One-click optimisation via a script tagChanges applied with JavaScript are not seen by AI crawlers, which do not run it.
A single score that measures AI visibilityVisibility differs per engine and per prompt. One number hides more than it shows.
It replaces SEOThe technical foundation is shared, and most sites still get the majority of traffic from classic search.

The unglamorous summary: this is mostly engineering, it is measurable if you define the measurement first, and the biggest single win is usually making your pages readable without JavaScript.

Frequently asked

What is LLM SEO?
LLM SEO is optimising a website so large language models can read it and quote it when answering questions, resulting in the brand being named in AI answers. It overlaps almost entirely with answer engine optimization and generative engine optimization.
Is LLM SEO the same as AEO and GEO?
In practice yes. The names differ by which engines people have in mind, but the deliverables — readable HTML, structured data, crawler access, direct answers, and citation tracking — are the same.
Do I need an LLM SEO tool?
A tool helps with the measurement half by running prompts across engines on a schedule. The optimisation half is changes to your site, which no tool can make for you unless it can write to your source or your platform.
Does LLM SEO replace traditional SEO?
No. Most sites still receive the majority of their traffic from classic search, and the technical foundation serves both. Treat it as an extension rather than a replacement.
